Title: Exotic scales

IbanezDaemon - August 30, 2008 01:09 PM (GMT)
Here are some exotic scales which I said I would post. There are various one's here from around the world. Some of them may sound discordant but if used in the right context can be very effective. You may or may not like any of them but anyway here goes.

I will post the note form of the scale then the fingerings over 2 octaves in tablature in A at the fifth fret. You can then transpose them without too much difficulty if you like.

I hadn’t seen this post, but I see there is lots of scales here…
Thanks to everyone .

When playing an exotic scale I wonder how to make it sound really "exotic", and it's difficult because the major and minor scales are always in my ears...

There is an intresting video showing how Steve Vai made an approach to bulgarian music. I think it’s fine because he explains how he faced the “challenge” in his song “Freakshow excess”.

I know there's a book called Monster scales by one of Marty's student,Dave Celentano .

http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Scales-Modes...50274761&sr=8-1

I know Marty was one of the guys who brought them over to America. But who actually created these scales. I know marty created at least one of them like he creates some of his own arpeggios(which is extremely easy.)

Lektro - August 14, 2009 08:15 PM (GMT)
Since most of these posts are seriously lacking in scale formulas, I'm putting all the formulas to every scale that Hurricane Kid Ibanez Daemon (SORRY HK) posted (and Steve's, too) here. Since a good many of them pay no regard to western diatonic theory, I just related them all to the major scale, with flats as the modifiers, to have some kind of unity. Anyway, here ya go.

Arabian: 1 2 b3 4 b5 b6 6 7
Hindustan: 1 2 3 4 5 b6 b7
Persian: 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 7
Romanian: 1 2 b3 b5 5 6 b7
Hungarian Major: 1 b3 3 b5 5 6 b7
Scriabin: 1 b2 3 5 6
Egyptian: 1 2 4 5 b7
Japanese: 1 b2 4 5 b6
Chinese: 1 3 b5 5 7
Iwato: 1 b2 4 b5 b7
Konkin Joshi: 1 b2 4 5 b7
P'Yongio: 1 2 4 5 6 b7
Pelog: 1 b2 b3 5 b6
Oriental: 1 b2 3 4 b5 6 b7
Kumoi: 1 2 b3 5 6
Hirajoshi: 1 2 b3 5 b6
Enigmatic: 1 b2 3 b5 b6 b7 7 (this scale has a natural 4 instead of a b5 when descending)
Prometheus: 1 2 3 b5 b7
Overtone: 1 2 3 b5 5 6 b7
Neapolitan Minor: 1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 7
Neapolitan Major: 1 b2 b3 4 5 6 7
Steve's Japanese Thing: (See Hirajoshi)

Get noodling!

IbanezDaemon - August 14, 2009 08:28 PM (GMT)
Erm.... the blame for not posting the formulas mainly lies with me not HK, I would have posted them but it took ages to tab those scales out. ;)

Lektro - August 14, 2009 09:52 PM (GMT)
Wow, make all those formulas, and mess up the name of the person who made them, that I stared at constantly the entire time I was whipping them up.

I'm hoping those formulas are right.

yohannes - December 28, 2009 05:46 PM (GMT)
Harmonic Minor Scale still the best for Neoclassical music.

nekros729 - February 5, 2010 03:10 PM (GMT)
I think there is no best, but if you want to add some flavor the exotics are a good way to do it.
