Ok so now i feel like playing neo-classical metal, iv looked for lessons on it online cant find any, so i was hooping some1 here could help me. I can economy pick and stuff so yeah. What scales do i need to learn for neocalsicalmetal also i need some exercises to work on my picking cuz it isn't fast enough for yngwie stuff etc.
neoshredder - April 10, 2010 01:09 AM (GMT)
Harmonic Minor Scale is the most used scale for neo-classical metal. Natural Minor, Major Scale, and Melodic minor are also used. Here is the theory behind the scales.

oh kk ty dude
Got a any good economy picking exercises both decending and ascending so i can increase and impore my picking speed? it's not fast enpugh for economy picking
malikshreds - April 12, 2010 11:30 PM (GMT)
Don't just memorize scales. Learn the theory of them and learn how to put them into music. Like someone once said, no one likes a dumb musician.
Some other scales are the Greek Modes.

Just use the metronome and use chromatic scales or any other scale you want to work on. Use the 3 notes per string patterns for the major and minor scales.

It's your choice but I can't stress this enough: learn to read notation. It will reward you big time.
Anyway, that's the one!
ilikeguitar - April 13, 2010 10:29 PM (GMT)
k Ty dude send me a link to where i can learn to read notation plz!
Also i was junst practicing the scale and i notice i pick differently.
Sometimes i use my wrist other times i use my whole arm! So now im confused wich 1 is right? and wich is wrong? I pick at same speed with both but i want to know wich 1 is right
neoshredder - April 13, 2010 10:46 PM (GMT)
Use the wrist. That link also has tab.
http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_sc...et&t=0&choice=1http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_sc...et&t=0&choice=1 Are the best patterns to use. Extend it to 3 notes per string if you figure that out. Wider stretches but easier to use it with a metronome.
malikshreds - April 13, 2010 11:56 PM (GMT)
Acousolysis and I know how much reading notation is good for musicians.
You can't really
learn to read notations online.
You have to learn from a book because the book will have songs in it that will have you sight read.
Find a Hal Leonard book. Complete Series.
It'll help out a lot. It helps me.
Also read Neoshredder theory posts.
And pick up A Player's Guide to Chords and Harmony.
http://www.amazon.com/Players-Guide-Chords...d/dp/0879307986and this book.

Well it depends if you stretched out the scale. 3 notes per scale here. Each string starts with your first finger in this style here. If you have trouble stretching, than use the other example in that link. A B C D E F G# A.
-------------------------------7-8-10--------------
------------------------6-9-10---------------------
------------------5-7-9-----------------------------
------------6-7-9------------------------------------
------5-7-8--------------------------------------------
5-7-8---------------------------------------------------
The most popular time to use the harmonic is on the E Maj chord. The 5th note of A Harmonic minor. This pattern starts with E.
-------------------------------------------------13-16-17--------------
----------------------------------------13-15-17---------------------
------------------------------13-14-16-----------------------------
--------------------12-14-15------------------------------------
----------12-14-15--------------------------------------------
12-13-16---------------------------------------------------
ilikeguitar - April 14, 2010 02:26 AM (GMT)
ty dude i was using the normal harmonic, i didn't make it 3 notes per scale. Bu i guess ill start using 3 notes per scale im going to use that example
-------------------------------7-8-10--------------
------------------------6-9-10---------------------
------------------5-7-9-----------------------------
------------6-7-9------------------------------------
------5-7-8--------------------------------------------
5-7-8---------------------------------------------------
Ill do it ascending and decending :D Ty dude i was just practicing i can get the harmonic minor to 140 bpm haven't tried 150 yet
ilikeguitar - April 14, 2010 09:37 PM (GMT)
i was jsut practicing and ran into a problem
-------------------------------7-8-10--------------
------------------------6-9-10---------------------
------------------5-7-9-----------------------------
------------6-7-9------------------------------------
------5-7-8--------------------------------------------
5-7-8---------------------------------------------------
What fingers should i use when i do the 5-7-9 on the G string?
And what figners do i sue when i do this acending? i have a problem when i got from 10-8-7 to 10-9-6 gives me a real hard time i guess im not usign right fingers?

Fingers 1, 2, and 4 for 5-7-9.
10-8-7 uses fingers 4, 2, 1
10-9-6 uses fingers 4, 3, 1
Acousolysis - April 14, 2010 09:47 PM (GMT)
I tried that out and used first-middle-pinky - first-ring-pinky - first-middle-pinky for 5-7-9 - 6-9-10 - 7-8-10, respectively, both ascending and descending.
It's up to you, though. You'll have to find out the way you prefer to do it; there's no solely correct way of doing it.

That's enough. Just gotta not take days off and continue to do that. Need more scale patterns?
ilikeguitar - April 15, 2010 12:02 AM (GMT)
k dude ima try from 1 tp 2 horus a day, cuz 3 hours is just killing me hope thats ok.
malikshreds - April 15, 2010 01:19 AM (GMT)
As for practicing, it's completely up to you. Since you got such a long period of time to practice, take out your theory book and study that and apply it to the guitar. Also practice with the Hal Leonard book I recommend. That'll keep you going.
Also, it's better to practice for at least 30 minutes a day then then 3 hours every few days. Basically that mean practice everyday.
ilikeguitar - April 15, 2010 02:17 AM (GMT)
yay! Im at 140- bpm on the ntoeper string 1

There are various ways to practice scales and if you just run up and down the scale from top to bottom over and over again it will make your practice sessions extremely tedious. If you get bored practising for 3 hours at a time I suggest you practice for 1 hour a time, 3 times a day. It's important to have some type of structure to your practising as well instead of just blindly shredding through scales all the time.
Acousolysis - April 15, 2010 08:35 AM (GMT)
I would personally consider learning to play various songs for building chops; scale exercises should be executed for more theoretical purposes.
ilikeguitar - April 15, 2010 11:15 PM (GMT)
hmm, k ty dude got any songs?
malikshreds - April 16, 2010 12:26 AM (GMT)
Depends on how good your ears are. I would say start out with songs of Marty Friedman's Dragon's Kiss or Scenes.
ilikeguitar - April 16, 2010 02:23 AM (GMT)
k dude ill try some songs off that album, im at 168 bpm now on hte metronome from
http://www.metronomeonline.com/ :D
also got any songs from thise albums i should specifaclly practice? ill use tabs cuz i havent gotten the books yet

"Far Beyond the Sun" by Yngwie Malmsteen. Some great shred stuff there.

Assuming you wish to learn to economy pick efficiently, you could try learning some mad sweep sections from various songs: Altitudes and Serrana by Jason Becker, The Psalm of Lydia by Nevermore, Jato Unit by Jeff Loomis, Shadows and Mirrors by Symphony X... the list goes on.
In general, you should just practice the songs that you really like or want to learn. This way you won't get so bored of playing as quickly.
It really doesn't matter what level you're at or how difficult the songs are to perform: just keep your head cool and practice the stuff slowly enough.
ilikeguitar - April 16, 2010 09:35 PM (GMT)
k ty so much guys, Im going to start with trilogy op 5 seems cool

| hey guys i know this a little off topic but, My friend invited me to his band its like a rock band, and now i have to come up with a solo any tips? |
Try to sing out the solo and then add it to the guitar. Imagine what a good solo would sound like in that song. If you know the scales to the chord progression, you can improv it as well.
malikshreds - April 19, 2010 09:28 PM (GMT)
Watch Marty Friedman's Melodic Control. It's on google video.
Also there's some way you can make a good guitar solo. Like Neoshredder said, use a scale that goes good with the chord progession.
Also, you could do the basic blues solo that is used in rock. Just do bending and vibrato using a pentatonic or blues scale.
ilikeguitar - April 19, 2010 09:36 PM (GMT)
ye i was doing that heres what i made, its short cuz the solo needs to be short
e|15p12-14p12-15p12--14p12--------------------------------------
b|---------------------------------15-14-12--------------------------
g|----------------------------------------------15-13-12--------
Run out of space heres is the rest
e------------------------------------------------------------------
b--------------------------------------------------------------
g----------12v------14----14b----12v-----------------------------
d--14---------------14----14b----12v------------------------------
Run out of space so here is what is next
g---14---14b----12v-------------------12v
d---14---14b----12v--14 12 14----
anyways u guys can help me improv or come up with something better?
malikshreds - April 19, 2010 10:23 PM (GMT)
Looks like you're using 24th notes then went to triplets right?
ilikeguitar - April 20, 2010 12:18 AM (GMT)
well the pull offs i got inspired from an exercises i used to do the triplets u dud by using the harmonic scale.
Anywasy how does it soound? u guys think its good? any improvements that u guys recomend?
ilikeguitar - April 20, 2010 12:20 AM (GMT)
oh yeah also, i heard that i shuld make like drills, my friend said that i should didecate liek 15 mins to practicing a techinque and another to practicing another technique etc. I need practice on my economy and sweep picking. For economy im doing trilogy intro and stuff idk what to do for sweeping tho, what do u guys think about smoke and mirrors by symphony x to practice my sweeping
